MOQ, Trial Orders and the First Container
September 21, 2026
Almost every plywood enquiry from a new buyer opens with the same question, and it is usually the wrong one. The question is not how small an order can be. It is how to structure a first order so that you learn something useful for a price you can afford.
Why mills quote from a full container
The press runs a schedule. Changing from one specification to another costs setup time, and a mill that stops the line for a part load charges for it, one way or another.
Then the freight arithmetic makes it worse: a part load pays for a share of a container and for consolidation handling, and the panels get moved more times, which is where edge damage comes from.
That is why one container is the practical floor. For 18 mm panels at 1220 x 2440 mm, that is roughly 400 to 500 sheets, and the calculation behind that number is in how many plywood sheets fit in a container.
What samples do and do not tell you
Samples answer questions about the panel: face appearance, glue line, edge, colour, thickness at one point.
They answer nothing about consistency, which is what actually goes wrong. A mill can produce three beautiful sample boards and ship a container with a different core. That is why a sample is only useful when it is retained, marked and written into the purchase order, as described in how to check a Vietnam plywood mill.
Ask for production samples, not showroom boards, and ask for them from a recent run of the exact specification.
Structuring a first order
Four rules make a first container informative:
- One specification. Not five. You are testing the mill, and a single specification is a clean test
- A product the mill already runs. A first order is not the moment to ask for something unusual
- Pre shipment inspection. A few hundred dollars for a person standing in the factory with your specification while the container fills
- Payment structured against milestones, not against goodwill. The terms are covered in payment terms for a plywood order
What a small order really costs
| Order size | What changes |
|---|---|
| Full container, one specification | Best price, mill engaged, clean test |
| Full container, mixed specifications | Setup cost inside the price, longer lead time, messier stow |
| Part load through a consolidator | Higher price per sheet, more handling, less control over who pressed it |
| Sample quantities | Courier cost, useful for the panel, not for the mill |
The gap between the first and the third row is usually wider than buyers expect, and it is rarely visible in the quoted unit price. It shows up in landed cost, which is the only number worth comparing. That comparison is set out in FOB, CIF and DDP.
If a full container is genuinely too much
Three honest options:
- Buy from a stockist in your market. You pay more per sheet and you get the quantity you need today
- Combine specifications you actually use into one container rather than buying one specification you do not need in volume
- Wait until your demand is real. Plywood stored badly for six months is not the saving it looked like, for the reasons in packing and storing plywood

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order for plywood from Vietnam?
Most exporting mills quote from one full container, which for 18 mm panels is roughly 400 to 500 sheets. Smaller quantities happen through traders and consolidators, at a higher price per sheet and with less control over the specification.
Can I order a few sheets as a trial?
You can order samples, usually a handful of panels or cut pieces, and you pay the courier. That tells you about the panel. It does not tell you whether the mill can hold the specification across a container, which is what a first order tests.
Should the first order be small?
Small enough that a mistake is survivable, large enough that the mill treats it as a real order. One container of a single specification usually hits both. A part load of five specifications does not.
