How Many Plywood Sheets Fit in a Container

September 21, 2026

Container planning is where a good plywood price turns into a bad landed cost. The two limits are volume and weight, and for plywood they rarely bind at the same time.

The two limits

  • A 20ft dry container takes roughly 25 to 28 cubic metres of plywood before it runs out of room. At normal panel densities that load stays inside the payload, so volume is the limit
  • A 40ft or 40HC has far more space than a plywood load may legally weigh. Here the payload is the limit, and a plywood load commonly works out around 40 to 45 cubic metres

Which means the honest answer to “how many sheets” is a calculation, not a number.

Sheets by thickness, 1220 x 2440 mm

Thickness Volume per sheet 20ft at 27 m3 40HC at 43 m3
9 mm 0.0268 m3 about 1,000 about 1,600
12 mm 0.0357 m3 about 755 about 1,200
15 mm 0.0447 m3 about 600 about 960
18 mm 0.0536 m3 about 500 about 800
21 mm 0.0625 m3 about 430 about 685
25 mm 0.0744 m3 about 360 about 575

These are gross figures. Subtract packing material, and subtract more if the load is palletised. Check the weight against the payload using plywood weight per sheet before you commit, especially on 18 mm and above in a 40HC.

Packing choices that matter

Pallets or loose. Palletised loads unload in an hour with a forklift and lose space to the pallet. Loose stow fits more sheets and takes a crew half a day. Decide by what happens at your end, and say so before the quote.

Strapping and wrapping. Steel strapping holds a bundle tight and can bite into the edges of the top sheets without edge protectors. Stretch wrap protects the surface and does not restrain the bundle on its own. Most mills use both, with corner protectors. Ask which, and ask for a photo of a loaded container from a previous shipment.

Moisture. Panels loaded warm and humid, then shipped through temperature changes, condense inside the box. Desiccant bags and a dry loading yard matter more than most buyers realise. The storage side of it is in packing and storing plywood.

Mixed loads

Mixing thicknesses in one container is normal and needs a plan. Two rules make it work:

  1. Heavy at the bottom, full width. Thick panels form the base, thin panels ride on top
  2. Give the mill the full mix before it quotes. A mix changes the press schedule as well as the stow, and a mill that finds out at loading will improvise

What to agree in writing

  • Target cubic metres and target gross weight for the container
  • Palletised or loose, and the pallet dimensions if palletised
  • Strapping method and corner protection
  • Desiccant, and how many
  • Loading photographs sent before the doors close

That last line costs nothing and has saved more claims than any other item on this page.

The container plan is stage 6 of the route in our guide to import plywood from Vietnam.

Frequently asked questions

How many 18 mm sheets fit in a 20ft container?

A 20ft holds roughly 25 to 28 cubic metres of plywood, which is about 470 to 520 sheets of 18 mm at 1220 x 2440 mm before packing material. Mills usually quote 400 to 500 to leave room for pallets, dunnage and a safe stow.

Why does a 40ft not hold twice as much?

Because plywood runs out of payload before it runs out of space. A 40ft or 40HC has more volume than a plywood load may legally weigh, so the limit becomes the weight on the axle, not the cubic metres in the box.

Should I ship on pallets or loose?

Pallets protect the panels and speed up unloading, and they cost space and weight. Loose stow fits more and needs labour and care at both ends. Decide by how your warehouse unloads, then tell the mill before it quotes.
